Racing car tuners form a very important part of the history of motor sport: it is they who lay the foundations for victory or defeat. Far more than mere mechanics: true characters from a novel in certain cases. And Virgilio Conrero is certainly one of these, a self-taught man, one who worked during the day and attended vocational schools in early 20th century Turin in the evening. Fiat Aviazione as a starting point life guide, Cisitalia and a friendship with the brilliant Savonuzzi to take flight. Years spent learning to talk to “horses”, in which he grew and matured, working firstly on Alfa Romeos and then Opels. In rallies and on the track. Virgilio Conrero, the “Wizard” was called despite not liking the nickname as - he used to say – “I’ve worked and studied and learnt, I’m no wizard”, was probably the greatest Italian tuner of the post-war period, from the “roaring fifties”, through to the threshold of the computer age.
