How did the revolt of the Angeli Ribelli or Rebel Angels begin? It all began on the 30th of June 1956 with the premature death, at 24 years of age, of Dino, Enzo Ferrari’s first born son. From that day on, the health of Laura Domenica Garello, wife of the Drake and mother of Dino, began to deteriorate. The following year, in 1957, Castellotti died in Modena and De Portago in the Mille Miglia, in a tragic accident that put an end to the classic Brescian race.
In 1958, Luigi Musso was also killed at Reims and in 1961, Von Trip’s Ferrari ripped through the crowd at Monza, leaving 15 victims along with the lifeless body of the German driver on the track.
This was without doubt the most difficult period of the Drake’s life and he was twice put on the ropes. His undisputed position as charismatic leader appeared to waver to the point where all his most trusted managers, in an attempt to resolve the Scuderia’s internal disputes, actually turned to a lawyer; however this then led to their sacking by the Drake.
The "Angeli Ribelli", as they came to be known, decide to found a rival team, the ATS, born in the image and likeness of Ferrari House and then vanished in the space of a single season.
This is the backbone of Danilo Castellarin’s enthralling and detailed account which leads the reader through some of the most fascinating and controversial pages in the history of the Prancing Horse.
The volume includes two photographic cahiers with over 50 precious, unpublished images - taken by Franco Villani, at the time official reporter of the Bolognese company - which document the salient phases of the ATS "meteor".
